If you’re interested in contributing, head to your nearest home improvement store and pick up a paint chip (or several). You can select your chip at random, based on the name, the color, the fact that it reminds you of the dirt in the backyard of your childhood home, or because the shade of blue matches your grandmother’s hair. Your reasons are entirely your own. And you’re going to let this paint chip suggest a theme, subject, or vision to you. It doesn’t have to be about the chip itself, or paint, or color even, though it can be if you want it to.

Submissions are closed. Thank you for your proposals!

In our first issue, we unmasked the superheroes among us; in our second we delved into the noble, and sometimes tragic, kingdom that we referred to as animalia; and in our third we presented the unlikely marriage of borders and beans, pursuing both words to the limits of their potential. And now, we tackle a word, an emotion, a state of being that proved elusive quarry indeed. It has been frequently mentioned on the Central Coast, though rarely with any degree of thoughtful or provocative analyses. So, we invite you to explore "happy" with us. However you define it, and wherever you seek it, San Louie is, at the very least, a pit stop on the road to happy.

The Happy Issue is available for sale as a print magazine at Magcloud.com (preview the entire magazine here). You can also purchase a digital edition for your iPad or download a pdf. Both print and digital editions are being sold at cost.

Local painter, and San Louie contributor, Mark Bryan is having a 2-month show at Steynberg Gallery, starting Thursday, March 31st.

Mark is widely recognized as a deadly satirist taking on the villains of the day in surprising and delightful fashion. He is also known for his whimsical surrealistic work and pieces that evoke wonder and ask the big questions. Bryan's work has been widely exhibited and featured on numerous satirical and political web sites across the US and internationally. His work has appeared in many publications and magazines as illustration and cover art.

The nice people at Posterous HQ did a post on their blog which is all about San Louie. Thanks, Rich, and thank you Posterous for our amazing site.

While we have your attention we wanted to let you know about the next issue. In honor of San Luis Obispo being dubbed the happiest place in North America, our fourth issue has been named The Happy Issue. We intend to explore--humorously and creatively, of course--the concept of happiness, how it differs from person to person, where it's sometimes found, and why calling a town the happiest place on earth is a relatively ignorant statement.
And, we recently decided to turn to Kickstarter.com to help raise funds for future issues and projects, starting with Issue 4, The Happy Issue. Kickstarter is a site that connects people who want to fund creative projects with the minds behind said projects. Our ideas have always exceeded the scope of our wallets, but we're determined not to allow that to restrict our creativity. Do look for our announcement very soon.

And more images of the people who carry San Louie in their shops (Sally Loo's is missing from the lineup above). Neal almost smiled that time. Jennifer Young posted more outtakes here, from the Portuguese bean soup centerfold shoot.

And! Not an outtake but just as exciting: We're now in Cambria! You can find us at Deer Run Art & Artifacts and Grow Nursery, two lovely, lovely shops.

Catherine always seems to have the best luck in thrift shops. She found this image above for our Issue 3 one-pager on Secret Societies but sadly, we ran out of room. It's a little difficult to see at this size but they're all laughing their heads off. Makes you wonder what the joke was! More vintage finds below:

And this is a fun one that we tried to use but couldn't.

Or, a place for all the images we didn't have room to publish. We're always shaking our heads at just how much talent there is in our backyard and, case in point, here are some images from the shoot we did with Ben Riddering and Steve Bewley in Issue 3. In the course of taking these photographs we discovered Ron's, a delightful shop at 850 W. Grand Ave.  in Grover Beach. The last 5 photos are lights (by Steve Bewley) which can be found at Ron's.

Jennifer is a contributor to all 3 issues of San Louie and she has an exhibit of photos up at Humankind Fair Trade, starting today, March 4th, from 6-9pm. The show will be up all month, and the theme is a catchy one: Celebrate the everyday. Jennifer's quiet, easy style of working puts her subjects at ease, and her sense of color and composition is phenomenal. Please go see her show, it will be time well spent.

Set1
We found Mia Christopher on Etsy where she makes the most amazing little buttons, 1 inch in diameter, each drawn by hand. That's right, each little button is one of a kind. And she's prolific too -- Mia says that since getting her button maker she's done over 500 little drawings. We convinced her to do a few more, with the Octagon Barn as inspiration. The set above is the prize we're offering on Facebook: we'll hold a drawing with the names of the first 2 dozen people who complete their barn cut-and-paste projects and post photos to Facebook. The winner gets 4 teeny little pieces of art already framed :) Mia did one other set too, and has those buttons in her Etsy store.

Tue, 22 Feb 2011 19:30:00 -0800 An Octagon Barn pin (sold!) http://www.sanlouie.com/an-octagon-barn-pin http://www.sanlouie.com/an-octagon-barn-pin

Eva is a student in Athens, Greece, with a lovely shop on Etsy. She makes jewelry out of polymer clay. We were curious to see if the barn could work as perhaps a pendant or a pin and Eva's style was just perfect (her major is Agricultural Biotechnology). She loved the idea, and it was an interesting process to watch --  the second image above is her starting point. She finished today and the pin is now available on Etsy for all you Barnheads out there.
Thank you, Eva! Do look at the rest of her work --  the shop is being restocked but you can always view past pieces in the sold section of the shop.
Eva's shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/nomilktoday

Update: The Octagon Barn has some fans in Greece! Eva sold the pin to a Greek customer and has had another local request for a barn pendant.

Mon, 14 Feb 2011 19:25:00 -0800 Blogging away on the Central Coast http://www.sanlouie.com/blogging-away-on-the-central-coast http://www.sanlouie.com/blogging-away-on-the-central-coast

We've come to know more than a few of you online and were curious about just how many Central Coast bloggers sent dispatches off into the www with any kind of frequency. So we sat down this past week and came up with over four dozen sites, and we know that's just the tip of the iceberg. We've collected the sites here, and we hope you like it well enough to send in your own. Come hang out with us this Thursday from 6-8 and meet Louie, details in the post just under this one.

To get your blog added, we'll need these items e-mailed to hello@:
1. A compelling image, no smaller than 500 pixels wide
2. A few sentences about the blog
